The strong technical infrastructure inherited from the Soviet era, together with the accumulated expertise in space technology and the defense industry, is carried forward in today's universities through modern programs. Bauman Technical University is referred to as 'the MIT of Russia', while MEPhI Nuclear University is one of the world leaders in nuclear physics and cybersecurity. ITMO University has won world championships in programming olympiads. Engineering programs are generally organized as 4 years of bachelor's + 2 years of master's. Sub-disciplines include mechanical, computer, electrical-electronics, civil, petroleum and aerospace engineering.
